If you’re looking for an online summer program for your teen during the enhanced community quarantine, Abot Tala’s 2020 Summer Program for Teens will be available online from April 20 to June 4. We’ve set up a virtual Abot Tala center on Slack. Teens will have access to the channels or rooms of their different classes anytime throughout the program and when it’s time for their class, their mentor will teach and facilitate the class via a Zoom meeting (video call).
Classes are from Mondays to Thursdays, 9am-3pm. Teen members are free to pick the classes they’d like to be part of and they can choose to attend Abot Tala full-time, from Mondays to Thursdays, or they can choose certain days of the week when the classes they like are scheduled.

What the fee includes: Access to all classes that are available on the day(s) they’ve signed up for including our Community Huddle every Thursday at 9am, access to our Masterclass.com subscription and priority sign-up for our Free Friday classes/sessions, which we are offering free of charge for teens who would like to experience what Abot Tala classes are all about.
Those who sign-up for fulltime membership (4x and 3x a week) are matched with a mentor whom they have one-on-one advisory sessions once a week. Fulltime members also have access to the online classes of our partner Liberated Learners centers in the USA.
Meanwhile, for those who’d like to join us but would only want to choose per class basis, the fee is 2,400 for six sessions per class (400/classs). They will only have access to the channel/room of the class they signed up for.

Videos and Conversations
Every week the mentor and teens will take turns in featuring a video of their choice about different subject matters. Afterwhich, a healthy discussion about what we watched will be encouraged.
Open Legend RPG
Open Legend is a tabletop role-playing game (RPG) that allows players to design the characters and the setting without limitations. Open legend does not use specific pre-set character skills but instead requires the players to customize/personalize the different aspects of their characters’ persona.
This class teaches proper analysis and preparation for working with dramatic text. Together, we’ll be discovering more as we read scripts and explore the possibilities of their stagings through a technique called Backwards and Forwards. This technique will improve your theatre experience as a performer, director, as part of a production team, or even as an audience!
Teens get a crash course in Philippine History in the context of what was happening with the rest of the world. It’s designed to challenge the students’ perspectives of the Philippines and its role in the world at large.
Spoken Word Poetry
With the fundamentals of spoken word you can express yourself in poetic accuracy, using techniques both in theater and page poetry, we will study how to better seize the day! Classes with focus on elevating language, imagery development, stage delivery, gesture management, and overall figuring out what makes you yawp!
It’s a full hour of talking about all sorts of stuff in Filipino and Taglish. The goal is to get the teens comfortable in conversing in Filipino and Taglish.
Math Gym is a personalized enrichment program for learners who want to enhance their math knowledge and skills. Each learner’s current level and goals will be assessed at the beginning of the term. Throughout the duration of the course, a personalized curriculum will be develops based on the learner’s aptitude and learning style.
Anime appreciation is a course that seeks to provide a more complete understanding of aspects of anime and its contemporary history. In this course, students can see how anime genres progressed over time and how those elements stay relevant even in real life. In addition, students will be free to discuss their favorite shows as well as have a more in-depth understanding of some titles. They will also get a chance to brainstorm and exercise their creativity in coming up with their own anime-inspired creations.
Filipino Sign Language
FSL is English-based (not Tagalog), and is largely based on ASL just with some localization to Filipino culture. The mentors who’ll facilitate this class are siblings. One of them was born hard of hearing so students will really learn from mentors who practice FSL often.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
A study on crimes, ethics, and philosophy. The teens will be given scenarios and they will be encouraged to freely discuss their opinions, which will hopefully help them make well thought of decisions.
Creativity on Command
A look into the 10 Mental Locks that hinders a creative mind, and learn how to think out of the box and use creativity in any field.
Fact, Fiction or Both: A Survey of Science Fiction Media and Literature
Film showing of selected clips from SciFi movies and shows followed by a moderated discussion. One central theme/topic will be set for each session (e.g. energy, nature, climate change, vaccination, food science, etc.)
This course is aimed at giving the learners a better understanding of dog behavior. The classes will touch on some theoretical aspects of animal psychology as well as practical skills, techniques that will help the learner improving their understanding and relationship with their pets.
German and English have the same roots. Speak basic German by learning useful German phrases and expressions in conversation plus their cultural contexts.
Take a crash course on this non-linear 5-stage process which is a structured way of solving almost any type of problem. It provides an opportunity for teens to take ownership of solving problems in a creative, positive, and innovative way.
Once a week, this is our chance to gather all of our teens and touch base with everyone and hang-out online as a community.
This is a course on biology, the science that deals with living things and their environment. The course will be administered based on the learning needs and interests of the members of the class. Topics on human anatomy, cell biology, taxonomy and ecology are in the scope of this course.
Character Design Illustration
Participants will learn the fundamentals of drawing and explore all its possibilities through drawing exercises, observing from life and mixing in a little imagination. This class will encourage a student’s love for drawing and guide them in ways to improve not only their drawing techniques but also their ability to talk about their own art. Students will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook that they can share and discuss with the class.
A look into the history of mythical and fantasy figures and elements present in popular culture.
Game Show Hour
This is our version of a fun academic and non-academic quiz night, but obviously held in the afternoon. We’ll be trying out different game show formats like Battle of the Brains, Jeopardy, Pinoy Henyo and more. This is our way of preparing to join quiz nights around the metro. Go team Abot Tala!

Learn basic or advanced Ukulele from a professional Uke player.
Each week we’ll be inviting different guests to talk about their chosen careers. Teens can ask all the questions they have about the guest’s career and chosen industry.
Safe and Sound
A full hour dedicated to creating a safe and sound space by supporting each other. Our facilitators aim to give our teens hope and they help them take brave and healthy steps forward as they navigate through overwhelming situations.
